Tranquil Moments

Ever notice how a cat can sleep anywhere? They can simply curl up in the most mundane places, and be at ease.

It's hard to be stressed out when watching a cat go about its everyday routine.For them,life is all about comfort. There are times when I wish we could all enjoy a quiet moment to just reflect and appreciate the joy of simply being.

When was the last time you sat back and just took in the world? I love falling asleep to the sound of the rain on my window,driving on a sunny day,or walking through fresh snow.

Even watching the sunrise can bring a smile to my face.

Perhaps we should all adapt the nature of the cat, and learn to find the best in each day.

Here "Kitty Kitty"

Just thought I would post these amazing Hot Pink Cheetah Nails. I love the look and ease of this product, and had tried a few sets of the Broadway Nail Dress collection earlier last year.

This design was so much fun, and thought it would liven up my afternoon, with a pop of color. Broadway Nail Dress comes in a variety of designs, and can be found pretty much anywhere nail products are sold,for around $5.99 (Walgreen's,Target,Rite Aid,Fred Meyers)

In the process,I do trim mine,then file the remaining excess off

The kit comes complete with nail decals,and a little emery board to smooth, and file them onto your nails.They should fit just slightly above the cuticle and extend just a bit beyond the tips. I find that trimming them to size, smoothing them, then filing off the excess really helps.

After they have been applied, I add a generous topcoat to seal, and protect them from peeling or lifting.

I'm happy to say, that these wear pretty well, and will last for about 4 days.

Simply "DASH-ing"

I have long admired the beautiful bronzed smokey eye look of Kim Kardashian. There are many tutorials out there from mild to dramatic,with deep dark black liner and mascara.

I wanted to create a simple,natural looking version, that is easy to re-create for an everyday look. Not all of us wants to wear heavy eye makeup to the office, right?

To create my look, I used an ELF Palette, The one shown contains 32 eye shadows, and I used the top four on the left to create my "DASH-ing" look.

First, simply apply the white shade all over eye, then add the light yellow shade for your lid color, then using a slant brush, add the brown shade to your crease,and the darker brown on the outer corner of your eye.

Follow with dark brown liner,a hint of silver on the waterline, and lots of mascara,for a not too over the top version of a soft bronze smokey eyed look.

The palette sells for around $10.00 and can be found at Target, or Walgreen's.

You can always add a deeper liner, or liquid liner for a great nighttime look,but this is just right for daytime.

LASH LOVE

There is nothing worse than running out of your favorite makeup,let alone running out of your daily go to mascara during a busy holiday weekend! Yep, I woke up only to realize that my trusty tube was all dried out.

Desperate as I was, I didn't want to brave the busy traffic and drive all the way to my local Sephora or Ulta, so I did what any non crazy fashionista would do, and headed for my local Walgreens. I'm so glad that I did!

Now, I don't usually buy drug-store makeup, but I spotted this on the shelf,and knowing how well Maybelline mascaras work, I decided to give it a whirl.

What I got was way more than I expected.

This is a brand new product, part of the Great Lash Line called Lots Of Lashes,and that's exactly the results it gave me.

This mascara defines your lashes to the max,and for $4.99 does it better than most luxury brands. It didn't flake,smudge or budge all day.

This is me, after applying just one coat of Lots Of Lashes mascara.. nothing else was added.

The brush is amazing,with little "teeth" that grab your lashes, even the tiny ones in the corner.

It was also easy to add length to the bottom lashes,which is usually a hassle with other types of brushes. This is one mascara that is on my top five list,and I will purchase again.

Long, lush lashes ,and alot of "whoa" without alot of dough?

I'll take that any day!

Candy Love

I wanted to do something special for Christmas Day, but the typical candy cane nails had been done to death. So, instead of red and white nails, I decided to go candy pink. I think this looks so much more fun, and gives a great peppermint candy effect.

I first used a super pearl white as my base. Pictured here is Tokyo Pearl from Sinful Color. It served as a perfect base. ($1.99, most drugstores)

I then followed with OPI Pink Shatter after applying two coats of the base shade, and then watched the magic happen.

This is a great example of being able to blend low end and high end together for beautiful results!

Sweet enough for any candy lover!

Holiday "Elf" Magic

Shopping for the holidays can be so much fun! You never know what you might come across on the shelves,and often you can pickup little makeup kits and brushes fairly cheap this time of year.

I spotted this great palette at Target the other day, and for the price, just couldn't say no.It's perfect for a neutral eye look, and is great for anyone wanting just a few simple colors to work with.

These are basic shades and compliment each other well.

The set is also a good gift idea for someone just learning how to put together their look. It has everything you need, highlighter,lid shades, and darker crease shades,as well as a coffee (dark brown) liner and a little eye shadow wand. There's even instructions on the inside to guide you through the process of applying the shades.

I believe that ELF has these out every year,but just changes the outside packaging to give them a new look. For the price of $5, it isn't a bad deal. You might want to toss the applicator,and beware, because the shadow does have a bit of fallout.

Tip for great application, use a slightly damp eyeshadow brush,you will get better color pay off.

This is a perfect little "ELF" on "MY" SHELF!

Winter Warm Ups (PNW Style)

Seattle is a bit of a hodgepodge when it comes to fashion do's and don'ts . One thing we have an affinity for is warm and comfortable clothing, especially to ward off the chill of those foggy and damp days.

Everywhere you go, you will see people reaching for fleece. Be it a jacket, a hoodie, or fleece pants,and boots paired with jeans and a down jacket or vest.

Brands such as The North Face,Columbia, and REI are ever popular choices, just hit the streets, and you will find them everywhere.

How can you still look fashionable,without looking dowdy?? Or become a major fashion "don't"...Here are a few great choices that wont hurt your budget or your neighbors eyes.

Try a smartly seamed zip up in a contrasting color, to add a little interest to your everyday look, or an eye popping shade, like these!

Every Seattle girl must have a pair of serious kick-rear boots,be it Uggs or ankle boots. Think of Nordstrom for your next purchase, or try DSW Shoes!

Breaking Dawn Part 1 (A Spoiler Free Review)

Last night at midnight, I joined 100 screaming teenage girls at my local theater for the premiere of the long awaited movie Breaking Dawn.

Now, I am a "Team Edward" fan, I have read all of the books,some of which were purchased at midnight release parties, and have seen every one of the films, so I guess I'd say that I am a "Twilight Mom" (one who is over the age of 30, and past the teenage crush stage)

Breaking Dawn is not your typical "fluffy,sparkly" vampire movie. It is much more mature,darker, and more graphic in nature that what you may be used to seeing on the big screen. It was very bravely done. This is the part where the characters grow up,and you can see it in their choice of clothing,and in their acting as well. Gone are the longing, first blushes of love.

What I love most about the Twilight series, is that hidden underneath all the imagery, there is always a message left behind to the viewers of these films. It's buried deep in Stephenie Meyer's books, but if you take the time to find it, it's like a little treasure, a tidbit of the authors soul and beliefs.

This movie carries a very important message. It's about finding out who you are, and having the courage to find out where you belong in this world. It's about staying true to your values,no matter what anyone else says, and it's about the power of families,and how important it is to love and protect them.

Without giving away too much information, I will say that "The Monsters" come out to play during the movie. Be prepared, not only for when they do, but for your reaction to it. It may not be what you are expecting.

This one, may leave you a bit stunned,but the coming of age, and taking one's place in life runs so deep, that you will walk away with a smile on your face.

"Ape" Over Grape

I don't know about you, but sometimes a fun nail color can brighten your whole day!

This playful shade from CHI in "Check Out The Venue" just lifted my spirits so much, and I got alot of compliments on the well, "noticeable color!" (Lol)

With all of the gray, rainy days we experience here in Seattle,a little zing goes a long way.

I can't rival Mother Nature's colors, but it's fun to try!

It's Novem"burr"

I was out for a walk today, and happened to spy this little fellow. Looks like he was venturing out, trying to catch the last little bit of sunshine for the day.

Seems like he was reluctant to "put on a heavy coat" like the rest of us. Sad to say, that winter is on it's way.

Temperatures are dropping into the mid 40's during the day, and the first frost has hit,as well as snow is on it's way here soon.

Time for fireplaces, hot chocolate,and warm boots. I'm on the hunt to bring the best choices for you, and will post back on upcoming fashion finds.

Where is your favorite place to shop for the cooler days ahead? There's a chill to the air, and it's time to pull out those sweaters and scarves.

Make Mine Spicy!

Halloween is the perfect time to embrace a deep pumpkin nail shade.

What's better than a warm,glowing spicy shade adorning your digits!

I spied this on a shelf and fell in love with the deep reddish brown with hints of glitter.

Unlike most of the sparkly shades out there, this one goes on sheer, and is best used layered over a good coat of rust or coral to make it stand out.

I layered Sally Hansen Pumpkin Spice Xtreme Wear here, over Essie "Very Structured" to get a beautiful Fall glow.

Simply "Fang-tastic"

Waiting in line

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting the legendary Diane von Furstenberg at the Nordstrom, Bellevue store.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was. This is one of the women who have helped to shape the world of fashion as we know it.

Perched on top of a black lacquer desk, this 64 year old powerhouse spoke briefly with everyone who waited patiently in line, and signed autographs, as well as bottles of her new perfume DIANE, a lovely mixture of frangipani and soft violet.

Best known for her knitted jersey wrap dress back in 1973, Ms. Furstenberg created an empire with signature prints for ready-to-wear, along with footwear, handbags, and even a limited edition T-Mobile Sidekick.

One of her other fragrance launches was Tatiana (named after her daughter)

Everything about her style is based on empowering women to go out there and be whoever they want to be, independent, fierce, and ready to embrace whatever comes their way.

Go get 'em, Tiger!

Show Your Colors

Fall is a time when nature puts on it's best colors.

How about you? If it's time for a change,try adding a new nail shade, or a bold lip color to your usual routine.

I recently purchased this gorgeous new nail lacquer from ESSIE, and I love it! Not only is the shade perfect for those cool autumn days, but the formula is glorious.

This is one of the best polishes I have ever picked up. The color is rich, you only really need one coat,and it goes on so smoothly, no streaks whatsoever,as well as dries to a shiny finish. Unlike other nail shades, you almost don't need a top coat, I only used a quick drying finish instead of a heavy top coat,because the shine was amazing.

I'm wearing VERY STRUCTURED here,and for $8.00, I think I have fallen in love with this brand. I am looking forward to trying some other shades that are part of their fall collection. Plums, tans, and deep berry shades will all turn heads.

Show some colors! After all, why let nature have all the fun?

"Chill Out"

When I was asked to review a new skin care product for Beautystat, I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. I have rather fussy skin, and have spent alot of time trying out products to find the perfect balance. I was curious to see what a moisturizer called "Zen Attitude" would do for my sensitive,porcelain complexion.

Dr. Jules Nabet has created a line of skincare products that recently launched in France, and has now made it's way to the US. This particular product was developed with "older" skin in mind and is geared towards reducing environmental stress from the skin, such as pollution,dehydration,temperature changes,etc. If you're on the go,this is the perfect cream for you.

Now again, here comes the "skeptical" part. Reading the ingredients, I learned that it contained yam.. Yep, that feeling of putting anything even close to sweet potatoes on my face made me cringe at first. It conjured up butter,marshmallows, and brown sugar, and yeah, that bright orange baby food mess. But when I first put some on my fingers to use, I soon got over that , and loved the overall texture and feeling.

The product comes in a tube,it is fluffy and light, with a very pleasant,clean fragrance. Not at all greasy or oily.

It contains Soya and Yam that is supposed to have pyto enzymes (that protect against aging) and it is blended with vitamins F,and E,along with Siberian Ginseng that help to "wake up" your skin, and give it a radiant look. It's like a cup of coffee for your face.

The instructions are to use this both day and night,and to apply during periods of stress to your skin. So if you are traveling,on the go, hoping from place to place, this is a great way to relax your skin. Just the name in itself "Zen Attitude" would make me reach for it.

My assignment was to use this for two weeks, then report on how I liked it. My first few days I noticed my skin looked less tired, and by that I mean more refreshed. it absorbed quickly. By weeks end, I noted that the results were only temporary,similar to the effects of other products on the market containing caffeine, and that after four or five hours,one would need to reapply to get the same "refreshed" look.

After using this for a little over two weeks, I really didn't see any anti-aging benefits,although I have good skin to start out with. For me, it was a little too rich,but I feel it would be perfect for someone who needs a deeper moisturizer for their skin. As mentioned above, this would also ideal for jet-lagged skin.

Is it worth it? For me, no. The reason is that I can achieve the same results with my current products, and the price of $69.00 just doesn't justify itself.

Girl Power Hour celebrated their four year anniversary with a glam party held at the Bellevue Hyatt September 28th.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to attend the past few years to celebrate with founder Darnell Sue, and her wonderful team.

Girl Power Hour is a social networking group made especially for women,and focuses on empowering women in business. The Anniversary party is the only event that allows men into the "secret pink halls"

This years party (literally) took the cake!

It showcased some beautiful fashion,a killer main party, as well as an after party at Earl's.

What a beautiful way to kick start Bellevue's Fashion Week.

An Evening With Zaharoff

One of the most popular mens designers just launched a whirlwind collection made especially for women.

I recently had the opportunity to meet designer George Zaharoff face to face at a mobile "tweet-up" held at Nordstrom in Bellevue Square.

George and I had been tweeting recently,and we became fast friends,along with his sidekick Giuseppe Longo (@FashionClassJet)

Piccolo steals the spotlight

Piccolo,Zararoff's Italian Greyhound was also on site to greet guests with lots of doggie kisses.

This new collection is nothing short of wonderful.

I asked George how long it took to go from concept (design) to reality (the actual,physical product) Normally ,it can take up to a year, but for this collection,the pieces will be limited,and would only take about 30 days from time of concept to finished product,and the priceline would be affordable fashion, mixed with luxe fabrics.

Anyone who knows this gentleman's designer would agree that quality and style is foremost in his designs.

Expect to see everything from jackets to pants, vests, and gorgeous,flowing tops with fabric coming from Italy, and France!

I'm excited to see this idea come to life,and the pieces offered are stylish, fun,and flirty! There is something there to meet the needs of both casual wear, as well as business wear.

FALL TO PIECES

Easy separates are often the best way to transition your wardrobe to fall.

Pair patterned tops with skirts,add a belt,and ankle boots for a great day to night look. A soft clutch does double duty.

One of my favorite pieces is a faux leather jacket that I bought last year at Dress Barn. It features a snap collar, and zipped sleeves . The fabric is buttery soft, and can be worn with jeans or a skirt,or even paired with a nice pair of dress pants.

I scouted the store online and was able to find a jacket that was featured there that is a similar style to this one. $59.99 at Dress Barn or Dressbarn.com

There's something really versatile about a chic sweater dress. Paired with a jacket or by itself,or with a statement necklace,it's always a smart choice. $39.99 also at Dress Barn.

A light weight cascade cardigan is my pick for a cool night,or days at the football game. You can layer this with anything from tees to a blouse. I found a similar one online at Dressbarn.com for $34.99

Finally,a great pair of heels can transition a look from plain to pzazz in no time. These are from DSW shoes. A lively bronze shade ,not your usual black will add style to jeans,skirts and more,and can go from office to cocktail party in a flash.

When in doubt, "fall to pieces" as your go to choice.

Hitting The Scene..Fashion's Night Out (Bellevue Style)

Fashion,food,and fun were on the menu last night as Bellevue celebrated it's own version of FNO. There were two venues to choose from,with live fashion shows,in-store events,and after party's.

The Bravern had two main shows, one at Neiman Marcus,and the other show at Anthropoligie. Models strutted the latest creations from their new fall line,and separates made a huge splash for the season.

The Bellevue Collection held it's own party, and I was in attendance.

Folks lined up early center court for live entertainment,photo booths,swag bags, food, (Dry Soda Company,PinkABella Cupcakes,and yummy bites from Joey's)

Not to mention bags filled with coupons and give aways from Aveda,Tully's, and more.

Live models hit the stage to show off pieces from Macy's,Cache`, and Banana Republic.

Attitude is key. Lots of accessories from hats to belted sweaters,and sky high heels were shown.

Printed and patterned tops, leopard skirts,and lots of red popped up for one of the "it" shades of autumn. Brightly colored jeans are back, for both men and women.

I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store later this month at the Nordstrom Fashion Show. I'll be there to cover all the details and happenings around town. Not to mention,a special "tweetup" September 24th.

There will be an in-store show called "Fashion,Class, and Jet lag" at Nordstrom from 4-7 pm that evening with designer, and friend, George Zaharoff.

Ode To A Cupcake (Or Two)

As you know,every now and then,I stray from the beauty and fashion world,and cover a story on a great local business that I have discovered. It's my blog, I get to do that! Lol!

I simply had to share with you, a delightful cupcake shop that I have had the pleasure of visiting quite a few times.

There are lots of cupcake shops and bakery's in Bellevue,but the quality and variety is what keeps me coming back to one in particular,not to mention the friendly and fun staff.

What sets New York Cupcakes apart from the rest is that they are consistently good.They don't taste like the mass market brands you see everyday. These cupcakes are "hefty".. they are filled with buttercream,carmel,fruit,or marshmallow,and topped again with sweet, real, buttercream frosting. This isn't the air whipped kind. This is the real thing. Just like your Grandmother used to make from scratch,and when you were a kid, used to beg to lick the spoon kind of frosting.

No matter which creation you choose, they somehow always manage to taste like they came straight from your very own kitchen.

I'm in love with several;from their wonderful all vanilla "Pure Bliss" to their "Orange Dreamcicle",along with their perfect "Long Island Lemon".

Each and every one looks handcrafted with love and a pinch of pixie dust.

Heavy Metal

The past few days have been noticeably cooler! Fall is on it's way, and the trees are starting to show patches of golden leaves.

With all of the blustery weather, I started thinking about some great nail looks for my favorite time of the year.

One of the transitional shades is a graphite from Spring. We'll still be seeing lots of grays,silvers,and deep greens this Autumn,along with plums, browns and retro patterns from the old glam days of Hollywood.

I had a bottle of Estee Lauder's Wild Storm on hand,($19) and decided to play. The color looks so intriguing in the bottle,a shimmery almost mercury like shade. I was a bit disappointed with the overall application of this shade. It took three coats to get this color on my nails. The first coat was thin and streaky,even with a good top coat. The results were a pretty satin gray shade,almost like the finish of a gift package ribbon.

However, the shade, just wasn't for me. It was flat, with no frost, not quite a cream, and just sat there. I really didn't think that it would last long;and so I reached for my crackle polish to amp up the finish a bit.

This actually wound up crackling in a very delightful way! What I was left with was an almost "python"finish to my nails that is cool, catches the light,and gave my plain-Jane polish just the right kick it needed to catch your eye!

Don't be afraid to play with color if it isn't the look you want! Try adding one of the new crackle polishes on top to give it a new dimension,or try adding a stencil or applique to make it interesting.

Spice Things Up

Every year a "certain" well known coffee company teases us with it's premiere of their Pumpkin Spice coffee.

Somehow drinking anything fall related when it is still 83 degrees outside,and we are wearing flip-flops and shorts, and attempting to stay cool under the ceiling fan doesn't make much sense,but the temptation to have a little taste of that fall favorite got the better of me, and I decided to seek out one of my seasonal favorites.

Stores are now getting in their pumpkin spice flavored coffees and creamers, so for those fans who don't want to wait for the $5 version of their favorite latte,you can venture to your nearby grocery store and pick up a bag of heavenly goodness before the second week of September.

I actually enjoyed a wee bit too much and wound up having three cups of coffee yesterday morning.

Just gearing up for all of the great fall fashion that is about launch. It's hard to believe that September is almost here,and am looking forward to Fashion's Night Out on September 8th.

I think my "writers" muse has had a bit too much fun and is worn out.. Lol! It's a tough life, being a cat!

An Easy Look To "Fall" For

Tired of your go to shades of beige's and browns? Yesterday, I thought I would try a new shade of eyeshadow to see if I could come up with a great transitional multi-purpose shade.

I love LORAC and usually their shades have many uses. Their baked bronzers go on soft and look lovely on cheeks, but I also had heard that they can double for an eye color (without causing irritation)

What I found was a gorgeous shade of fall gold that would be perfect to use either night or day.

I first used a very light beige as my all over lid color,then simply swept on my LORAC Baked Bronzer in TANtalize Me all over my lid and crease.

I then lined my eyes with a deep brown liner,and added plenty of mascara from LORAC ( MultiPlex 3D Lashes) Collection. The shadow lasted all day,and did not smudge or wear even in 85 degree heat.

This shade can be worn with a beautiful green or plum liner added, as well as a colorful mascara that will be oh-so-popular this coming fall season.

Orange "Creamsicle" Nails

Do you remember the old summertime favorite,the orange creamsicle? It always tasted so good on a hot summer day. Cool Orange sherbet, mixed with creamy vanilla ice cream all frozen straight from an icy cold freezer... Yum!

I've discovered a way to bring a touch of that cool, creaminess to your nails.

Here, I used Nars in "Orgasm", a beautiful peachy-orange shade. This hue is gorgeous on it's own. I love how the color applies. It is very smooth, goes on without streaking, and dries quickly to a soft finish. ($17)

Then, I applied a sheer coat of crackle finish nail color from Sally Hansen in Fractured Foil, a silvery, almost icing like effect was achieved.($6.99) The two shades went together perfectly to create my look.

The trick to making "Crackle" nail polish do it's magic is to make sure to use at least two coats of nail color, and make sure it is completely dry. That means waiting a few minutes between using the crackle color on top. Apply only a thin coat. Please note, sometimes these shades do have a tendency to thicken in the bottle if you let them sit awhile. It is perfectly okay to add just a drop or two of nail polish thinner to the bottle then shake to mix. You can find it at your local salon, or at Sally's Beauty Supply.Finish your look with a fast drying top coat to protect against chips.

As you can see, the finished result is a chilly orange with silver icing effect that is perfect for day or night.

Ice cream... anyone???

Feathered And Fine

I have been thinking about adding a few feather extensions to my hair for awhile now. I love the cute,bohemian,care-free look it gives to your hair.

I didn't really want to do anything drastic, just a few strands for fun,and to see how it would look on me.

I had "tested the waters" first, so to speak, by asking a few of my stylist friends on facebook, and twitter, what the best options would be, and when I went in for my haircut, my stylist was wearing the cutest feathers in her short,red hair.That pretty much sealed the deal.

Here's the breakdown : These feathers are just hair extensions that are woven into the hair,and attached with a small "bead". They can be washed and styled just like your own hair,and the can even be curled slightly with a curling iron, or flat iron. (very gently)

They generally last for about six weeks,and are made out of rooster feathers. They come in great shades from natural, to orange,red,purple, blue,etc. Depending on the style, you can even get patterned extensions.

My salon will do a little consultation with you, to choose the best colors, then gently "weave" the extension into your hair. The price for one is $15, two is $25

If you're "chicken" like me (pardon the pun) you can choose just a single monochromatic strand in a shade to match your hair.

I love mine, it gives just a playful touch to my style. Hopefully my cat will not want to play too much with my hair. Lol!

Special "Thanks" to Pzazz Hair Design

Musing About Fall

Every year, right before the major magazines launch and fashion week frenzy begins, I predict which fashions and beauty items will be a hit.

Most of the time, I've come pretty close to guessing the trends that will carry over from the cat walk to the streets.

So below, here are my picks for a fabulous fall.

Once more, we will see a return to color. This time with shades of deep green,bright blue, red,eggplant, and soft sable browns in outerwear. Coats will be the main staple for fashion this year,teamed with lady-like handbags and patterned or pleated totes in soft leather.

An example of whats to come ,can be seen in the upcoming designs of Coach.

I'm happy to see that they have brought back a more detailed look to their handbags and accessories.Please see : http://www.coach.com for more details.

Trousers,will once again be seen, this time in soft, flowing fabrics,with a wider leg than what we are used to seeing. Think silk,chiffon,even a soft wool,but movement will be key. These will be paired with tailored jackets,and jewel toned blouses.

Leopard, and jungle prints will be back on the streets with sleek shoes,and boots,as will soft brown suede.

Even nails will look fierce with shades of cheetah,and zebra.

Jewelry will be bold. The cuff bracelet still taking center stage. We will also see a return of the retro brooch,and monogram (signet) rings and necklaces. This will mainly be due, in part, to the upcoming "Twilight" craze, a nod to Victorian style. Hairclips,bracelets,and old fashioned style will see a comeback,especially during the holiday season.

Navy, will not replace black. Initially, we may see a brief show of navy in dresses paired with tan shoes, but black will stay the favored piece du jour.

Catch A Wave

I recently purchased this Kiss Nail Artist kit the other day at my local store.

I really love the stencils that came with it,and thought that it would be great for adding a cute whimsical touch to a manicure or pedicure.

The kits come with three bottles of nail art paint and 30 different stencils.

There is a variety of patterns to choose from, everything from flowers and butterflies, to stars and swirls.

I was going to do this pattern in gold, but wanted to test the overall consistency of the colors in this box.

I started with a beautiful sunny orange shade,then added the bright pink color for a playful sunburst.

The stencils are easy to apply,just peel and place over dry polish. Then, gently sweep on your accent color.

Test your brush first on paper to make sure color glides correctly.

Wait a moment or two, then remove the stencil,and voila`! To finish, top with a fast drying topcoat.

Overall, this was "okay" I was expecting a better design to come out, but I'm just learning, I haven't perfected my brushstroke yet.

The kits are $6.99 and available at most drugstores,and Kroger's, Fred Myers,etc.

Cute as can be, and you did it yourself!

"Mint Condition"

I just tried this look earlier today,and loved the cool ,frosty, mint green hue on my eyes. I added a pop of green to my inner corners to give it a modern,shimmering effect.

I basically just used shadows that I had on hand, so anything that matches will do.

First, I applied the light white-green shade from Maybelline New York in the Emerald Smokes compact (#08Q) all over my lids.

Then used Mac Enviably Fun a yellow-green to my lids,followed by the mid-green shade from Maybelline in crease, and the darker shade as liner for both upper and lower lashes.

After applying lots of black mascara, I then simply added a bright mint green to my inner corners of my eyes to light up the look.

This is a simple, and stunning look for a red head, and looks cool and classic on a hot summer day.

For evening, you can darken the effect by adding an emerald green eyeliner, or try a shocking turquoise to light up the night.

Smooth as a mint julep on a summer night!

Belated Birthdays

I love belated birthday gifts.. Especially the ones you get to buy for yourself!

I had been looking for a lovely padded case for my Blackberry for quite sometime, and found this online at the Coach website. I had even posted a picture of it on my page as a bit of a joke for a *hint present a few weeks ago.

I had a great case a few years ago that was made by 9 West,and being that Coach no longer makes their classic leather cell phone cases, I was elated when they came out with these.

They come complete with a little strap, and an outside pocket. On the inside is another pocket,as well as a place for your credit cards. You can even strap this on your already fabulous Coach bag.

Another great thing, is that you can shop online, then choose a nearby store to pick up your purchase. They had it all ready to go when I walked through the door. Fast, and easy!

Congratulations Dear..It's A Dud!

Have you ever purchased an item because a "well known" beauty guru recommended it, only to find out that when you got home,and tried it out for yourself that it didn't work at all?

I have a few times,based upon the product. When I went to my local Target, there were only two cans left on the shelf,so I thought this had to be great if it was selling out so fast. Who wouldn't want to make their style look a bit more shiny? Sun kissed hair.. I'm all for that!

What did you do? Did you take the product back? Did you store it underneath the sink,or did you toss it? What was the product?

Here is my "dud". This was supposed to make my hair shiny as I spritzed it on while styling. All I got was sticky hair. I kept looking at the directions to make sure that I was using it correctly, I was.. Ug! How frustrating.

Toss this one, and forget it. If you have tried this, let me know what your results was. I wasn't too impressed.

Purple "Reign"

It is a lush,silent, green world out there this morning. Rain is falling softly and I can smell pine in the air.

It's a perfect day to wear misty,muted colors,and so here is my look for the day.

This was based on a friends bold purple inspiration, but I chose softer shades of pink,gray, and purples,using Urban Decay.

First, I lightly dusted my lids all the way up to brow bone with "Grifter" a sheer pinkish purple.

I then applied "Flash" to the crease,and using a pointed brush, also applied along upper lash line. For my outer corner, I added a dark gray and slightly swept under my lower lash line at the edge of my eye.

I applied black mascara,lined my inner waterline with black liner, then swept on a plum eyeliner under my bottom lashes for an extra dash of purple color.

I love how this shade makes my eye color pop!

"Blues Lady"

I love trying out interesting combinations of eyeshadow. We all get tired of the neutral browns and beige's and pinks that are out there.

Every now and then, I like to be a little more daring with my look and love bringing out the blue -green color of my eyes.

I've read that blue eyeshadow is considered passe`and perhaps that matte blue with white highlighter is,but if you add a little modern edge to it with soft silvers, grays,or even a mixture of turquoise, it will give it a bit of eye catching appeal.

Here, I get "a little blue" to show you that blue is still a very sexy look!

For look #1 I used a combination of colors from Tarte. I started with a light silver for my base color, I then chose the icy blue for my lid color, adding a darker blue at outer corners and slightly up to crease. I lined the inner "v" of my eye with a silver eyeliner, then lined my upper lash line and waterline with black eyeliner.

To add a soft, modern edge, I then dusted on Allure loose eyeshadow by Motives over the eye with a loose fluffy brush.

For look #2 A pop of blue in Painkiller by Urban Decay was added simply to a soft pink eyeshadow. Eyes were rimmed in 24/7 eyeliner in oil slick. The color is applied to inner corner of eye, then brushed up slightly into crease. I also wrapped the color under my lower lashes to give more depth to the shade.

These looks are simple,are easy to achieve, and give an updated look to simple blue shadow.

Give yourself "the blues"

Summer "Greens"

I love to grow plants and fresh herbs during the summer. There is just something fresh and lush about keeping mint,basil,dill, etc in your kitchen to have on hand when you cook.

It brings a touch of the outdoors to your home!

Here, fresh peppermint (for iced tea) and catnip (for my cats to enjoy)

My strawberries are growing strong this summer as well, and I love putting fresh berries on my cereal in the morning!

It's "fashionable" to have a green thumb.

Summer "Glow Getters"

It's July, and the heat is on! We may be seeing fall reviews, but it is still summertime.

We all want to get a healthy glow on without damaging our skin. No one likes to look over baked, that fake orange look is a thing of the past, and gals are now embracing a non sprayed on tan look.

I am part of the "Pale" bunch, and often find myself reaching for blush,plus bronzer to give a nice "spent the day in the sun" look. Pairing blush over a bronzer gives a soft inner glow to the skin. Brush bronzer just slightly under hallow of cheekbone,along temples,and across forehead, just a dash on the nose.
An old hint from an Estee Lauder friend: "Think anywhere the sun would hit naturally" . Then top off with just a light dusting in a softer shade of blush on cheekbones.

Now, I really do use these products everyday.. One of my favorites is Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Star Bronzing Powder. I grabbed this from my local Macy's store when it first came out. The compact alone, is gorgeous. The size of the powder is generous, and the shades, either blended together or worn alone give a nice peachy look to the skin.

I show this with a small travel brush, but for best results,use a big fluffy brush.

I also love the bronzing powders that are included in the Sephora Color Play box that came out around Mother's Day this year. The kit is packed full of wonderful shades that you can interchange in a separate little compact, that you can customize,and pop into a purse or tote. Each shade has a magnet on the bottom, so you can lift them out, and pop your favorites into this little take along mirrored case.

Here, I show my "kit" for the day, along with blush and matching bronzing powder. I believe the bronzer is called "Terra."

The shades are just perfect matched with each other,and pretty much last all day. I love the ability to customize my own look.

Another great find is LORAC Baked Bronzer in TANtalize Me. This goes on very soft and gives just a hint of bronze color. It is perfect for highlighting already sun kissed skin.

I believe you can still find this at Ulta,or at Sephora.com.

I have always loved the LORAC Summer collections because of the wonderful bronze and gold shades that they come out with each year.

"Shatter Chatter"

I'm a bit late to get on-board with the latest color trend, but this is one that you simply must try.

As I had explained previously,finding the new OPI Shatter Collections can be as hard as finding.. well, a
Mermaid's Tear! But this is one quest that is definitely worth it.

OPI's Mermaid's Tears is not a color that requires two coats, but I do recommend it to deepen the color. It's that pretty, that it can stand by itself,goes on smooth,and really shines. No streaks at all.

The shade is an ice cream shop minty green,and dries quickly.

I then added a thin coat of Sally Hansen's Crackle Coat in Fractured Foil,which I like to think of as a silver frosting. It changed the finish entirely,adding an almost frosted glass effect that is just beautiful.

I always add a top coat to seal and protect my manicure,and with OPI's Rapid Dry Top Coat, it usually lasts for four days. The finished look is like an icy green leaf with spun sugar over it. Mesmerizing!

OPI Mermaid's Tears is part of the Pirates Of The Caribbean Collection and is priced at $8.50 .

I can truly see what all the fuss was about when this first launched. It looks like the scales of an unearthly creature.

"Transformers Bumblebee" Nail Look

I have to admit, I'm a big kid at heart. I am really excited about the upcoming Transformers movie.

One of my favorite characters is Bumblebee. Who wouldn't love that sweet big guy? Guardian,protector,humble,but fierce when he needs to be,and a pretty kick butt car when he's in disguise.

I swear, this was quite by accident, but I wound up creating a pretty cool look, and thought I would share it here.

I first started out with Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Mellow Yellow. I had originally thought this shade was a frost, but as it turned out, it is a cream. I began to wonder how this would look paired with OPI's Black Shatter,and reached for my bottle.

Here is the look with one coat of shatter on top.

I think it looks amazing and love the hints of yellow underneath.

A perfect "Bumblebee" look.

OPI Black Shatter is $8.50, and is still available at most Salon's where OPI products are sold, as well as Trade Secret, and at Pzazz Hair Design &Beauty Supply at Crossroads Mall in Bellevue.

This is a great way for us "grown-ups" to have a little kid style fun!

Hiding The Truth .. (Not Quite "Full Exposure")

Some products promise the world, and actually deliver,others promise,but somehow miss the mark completely.

I was really intrigued by Smashbox, and their latest release of Full Exposure Mascara.

The magazine and promos all looked very enticing. Who wouldn't get excited about having 104% more voluminous lashes,right? The ads all promised an "exclusive fiber" formula.

Well, don't waste your money,and if you do, throw this directly in the trash bin,and do not pass go!

At first look,the tube looks like it belongs on a model's table,but pull out the wand and the formula is thick,and gloppy. See how it sits at the end of the brush? When you try to apply it, it also smears on your lashes. If you already have long lashes,like I do it will hit your brow,and leave little black marks, since the formula goes on wet.

Now, what makes this wet, is that it contains olive oil,but the problem is, it doesn't dry very well.It makes it almost impossible to use on your lower lashes,and in the heat, it makes you have raccoon eyes.

This doesn't hold up at all. One little inkling of sweat or humidity,and hello black rims. What makes it so thick is that there is a combination of waxes(supposedly for flexible coverage?)

I've tried wearing this a few times, just to see if maybe it might work, but every time I've used it, I've had the same results. For $19, there are way better brands out there.This one goes directly in the waste basket in my bathroom.

Sorry Smashbox, I truly love your eye shadows,but this product is a total fail. Another reason why it doesn't work,is that once it does smear,it is impossible to wipe off. Go figure. I've tried this with lash primer,and without,and it is,at least for me, not wearable.

"Foiled Again"

For the past few months, I have been on a quest. A quest to find what has turned out to be tougher than finding the Holy Grail. I've been trying to get hold of OPI's Silver Shatter;and have searched every Salon,Trade Secret, Ulta, and Beauty works I can find.

Sadly, I still have not been lucky enough to find the magic elixir that will turn my nails to a liquid, shimmering treasure.

I just recently learned that Sally Hansen came out with a line of Crackle overcoats, that are supposed to do the exact same job as the OPI brand, and decided it would be much easier to find these at my local store.

I quickly headed to my nearest Rite Aid, and was greeted by an assortment of beautiful shades. There are actually eight in all, ranging fromWhite,Silver,Red,Pink,and so forth. My eyes kept going back to the silver, and so it was, that I finally found my Holy Grail.

I first started with a good base coat, then applied Sinful Colors Professional in "Oasis" ($1.99) This is a beautiful,Strawberry-Pink. To get a good solid color, I added two coats,and let dry completely. The coverage was even, and it did not streak.

Then came the "icing" on the cake, so to speak.
I brushed on the crackle overcoat in "Fractured Foil", a beautiful shimmering silver. This only required one thin coat to see results,and the formula did not get thick or goo-ey.
I really liked the results from the first nail. It almost looks like silver sugar on my nails, and is a perfect look paired with hot pink.
In the light, the silver is very shimmery.

I topped this with OPI Rapid Dry Top Coat, and for two days my manicure has lasted without any chips or problems.

I can't wait to pair this with other colors!

Have A "Frosty" Summer

The summer heat is on,but you can get a frosty cool eye look by following these steps.

Every now and then, I love to try to re-create a look from a movie,especially one that captures the eye and doesn't let go. I was mesmerized by the shimmering,icy look of "Emma Frost" in the recent X-Men First Class movie.

The role is expertly played by January Jones, who sports a retro,60-ish glamor, including teased blond hair, and pop pink lips, and silver rimmed eyes. The overall effect is villainously sexy.

For a purr-fect look I used several products. First, I brushed on Lancome's Lava all over,then on my lids I swept on Kitten Heel. I then used Urban Decay Snatch on browbone to add the "frost". This is a light, glittery pink that set off the color just right.

To define eyes, I then lined the inner "v" with silver eyeliner, and also waterline. Flash, a regal purple from Urban Decay, was then applied with a pointed brush as a liner.

For the same look you can use: Lancome Color Design Palette in Pink Envy $48

Available at www.lancome-usa.com Sweep pale pink all over lids, then add the darker pink as lid color.

I also recommend Aqua Eyes from Makeup Forever Try the silver in 8L $18 at sephora.com a liner for inner "v" and to rim the inside of eyes.

Add a bit of "sugar" with a pretty pink pout. Once again, you want to keep this a retro 60's look so think pinks with a hint of white or silver.

City Of Steel

I often call Bellevue the "City of Steel", not only because of the modern glass and steel buildings that adorn the downtown area, but also because of the cold people that I have found living there, and the reserve of steel one must have to deal with it.

Unless you fit into the group of so called "socialites",no one will speak to you. If you are not wearing designer clothes,or carrying the latest "it-girl" handbag you will be stared at as you enter one of their restaurants or coffee houses.

Shame on you! Where is your compassion? Where is your friendliness,and your willingness to help your neighbor? We are all bent on wanting to be a "Good Samaritan", but when it comes right down to it,we look the other way!

I recently had my car towed from a local shopping mall. Everyday, I would walk across the street from there,and stop for coffee before going into work. I would talk to the security guards in the morning, say hello to the local area folks, and chat with customers as they came into the shop, so people knew me,knew where I worked, and were used to seeing my car. I guess they never paid attention.

So, needless to say,when I came out to find my car had been towed away after almost two months,I was quite shocked. If only they had said SOMETHING,or posted a note on my windshield (even a nasty one) I would have gladly moved my vehicle. Instead, on a cold, rainy afternoon, with no warning, my car was gone.

How heartless can folks be? I had no jacket,my umbrella got turned inside out,and I had no transportation to get back home that day. As I made my way, by foot ,I was treated like a homeless person, as I stopped to catch my breath, dripping from the rain at a local Starbucks.

Is this how we treat our guests and tourists? This is not a warm welcome. All I wanted was the ability to get to a park and ride so that I could take a bus home. Instead, I walked several miles to get there.

In a world where we proclaim peace and brotherly love, not one single person offered assistance,a smile, nothing , yet every day I serve others.

One of my favorite quotes comes from a local band Deathcab For Cutie, it is a new song, that says "And if you feel just like a tourist in the city you were born,then it's time to go..
and define your destination. There's so many different places to call home.
Because when you find yourself the villain in the story you have written,it's plain to see, that sometimes the best intentions are in need of redemptions,would you agree?" (From the song "You Are A Tourist")

I had never felt more like an outsider in a city that I currently call my home.

Next time, THINK before you act. That person sitting across the table from you ,that stranger could be someone that is loved, a mother, a father, a sister, a brother,someone that needs help. Don't turn away.

Don't give someone an "unfashionable" welcome.

Rock Star Worthy Nails

The warmer weather is finally upon us, and so is the Summer Concert series. I wanted a special look for an upcoming concert for my nails, and thought I would try this look out.

There are so many different ways to wear OPI's Black Shatter nail polish. The black and mint green look has already been done to death,along with their newest shade "Teenage Dream", so I was going for a more blingy look. I had some shades sitting on my shelf,and decided to pair the shatter with Zoya Jules, a really pretty soft gold shimmer.

At first, the Jules wasn't really much to look at, and I wasn't quite sure if I even liked the shade on my nails,but adding the black shatter made all the difference in the world.

It turned plain nails into pure liquid gold, and gave me a rock star worthy look that I wanted to show off. This is a great look if you want a rich gold foil quality to your nails.

Here are the steps to follow:

First prep nails with a good base coat. Then follow with two coats of Zoya Jules (available at Trade Secret) $8.99

Once completely dry, add one coat of OPI Black Shatter,then top with OPI's Rapid Dry Top Coat. $8.50 Both are available at Trade Secret,online, and at local salons.

Keeping The "Red" In Redhead

"Summertime, and the living is easy".. Well, sort of. Being a red head especially in the summertime can be hard on hair.

Deep Red

Color fades fast,when spending time outdoors in the bright sunshine, and hair can get a bit dry. Over the years, I have been every shade of red there is, I think. from strawberry blond,to copper (which I love), to bright red, all the way to deep burgundy.

Copper

One thing's for sure, the key to long lasting hair color is to protect it from UV rays and damage. I have had great results with a few lines of haircare products,and am normally able to keep my color going for four weeks or longer by using them. (Yes, six weeks IS possible)

Strawberry w/Hi-Lites

Sometimes I color at home using either Garnier Hair color,or L'oreal Preference. I have found that these brands last the longest, with care, and condition hair the best. At the salon, my hairstylist uses Redkin. To keep my hair healthy, I usually time my cut and color all together, or color two days after a cut.

I strongly recommend using products that are sulfate free,meaning that there are no chemicals to strip hair color. My favorites are also from the L'oreal Haircare line. I use Ever Pure Shampoo and Conditioner. It is 100% sulfate free, and also 100% vegan. I also protect my hair with EverPure UV Protect Spray. A quick spritz,before styling protects hair from damaging rays. (and it smells wonderful! Rosemary and Mint infused) $8.99 at Target, and Walgreen's,most retailers. Shampoo $6.99

Another great product is from Aveda. Try their Sun Care Protective Hair Veil. This is a water -resistant spray that protects from both UVA and UVB damage. Infused with wintergreen and cinnamon bark oils ,and an

anti-oxidizing blend of green tea extract, certified organic sunflower seed oil and vitamin E. $26 Available at Aveda.com, and Aveda Salons.

Finding "Me" Time

Taking care of yourself while taking care of your family can be a challenge, Save a little time and money, with a great moisturizer.

Lancome Renergie Lift does the job of two creams, for the price of one.

I have been having a tough time finding moisturizer to meet the needs of somewhat dry, sensitive skin. Every one of them for some reason will leave a greasy feel to my skin, and later make it break out.

I recently decided to try Lancome, since they had a free gift with purchase, and I am so very glad that I did. One of my choices was Lift Volumentry. This lifting and reshaping cream not only firms but contains SPF 15 to protect skin.
The cream promises to give a youthfull appearence to skin and to lift jawline and facial features, giving smoother, tighter feel and appearance.

The first thing I noticed was the non-greasy texture,and the way it made my skin feel. It was light, it didnt irritate my skin (we all know that first sign of redness that appears) and it looked wonderful when I woke up in the morning. I didn't have any little breakouts along my chin or forehead.

I had been using Estee Lauder Daywear, but stopped because I noticed that my skin felt a bit oily,and that it was making my face breakout in little tiny bumps here and there. It also left my face with a slight redness after use, and I couldn't put on my foundation right away,or else it would slip off.

I have to say, that after using this for a week, I have noticed my skin looks brighter, has a firmer feel, and see much better results than with the Estee Lauder.

I think this one is a keeper,and will report down the road on how well it performs overall.

Don't be afraid to give this one a try yourself,I think you will be happy with the results.

Mom Magic

My son would probably kill me if he knew that I was sharing old stories with you. When he was a little boy, he used to marvel at how easily I could do things.

He would laugh at how I could untangle his shoelaces that were hopelessly knotted up, with just a few tries or make the best grilled cheese sandwiches (he used to bring his friends over just to try them ;-) )

He had a term called "Mom Magic" the ability to produce something that only moms knew how to do.. Lol! He has long since grown, and has a family of his own.

Moms now-a-days have a very complicated roll. We work, we spend time with our friends,we bake, we fix the meals (usually) we get the kids off to school each day, and perform everyday works of "magic" for our children. We're often the source of strength and advice for our families. I've been a single mom for a long time,and know that raising a child in itself is a full time job, let alone trying to maintain a life outside of raising said child.

"SHATTERED"

Beauty gals love playing with products,so when the latest craze for nails came along, I couldn't help but fall victim to the urge to grab these and try them for myself.

Katy Perry created a stir when she performed "Teenage Dream", her nails were all the rage! Her minx like pink nails were somehow mixed with an amazing black to produce a somewhat shattered look. OPI Products managed to produce a nail lacquer called "Black Shatter" that created the same effect,along with a stunning polish called "Teenage Dream".

The polish itself is indeed a dream. A beautiful sparkly bubblegum pink with hints of iridescent glitter. When worn alone this polish is all girl. I loved how it looked on my nails.

But, when paired with Black Shatter, it became a fun, funky look that catches the eye. Black Shatter goes on over dried nail enamel,and looks a bit like heavy black nail polish. However, after it is applied, the polish "crackles" (it is cool to watch it evaporate and shatter) over the Teenage Dream. This creates an almost broken egg effect over any nail polish.
It looks amazing!

Makeup is almost “second nature” to most of us. It’s the first thing we grab every morning as we head off to our jobs, our classes, or wherever. It makes our world a little brighter to put a fresh face forward.

KISSING FOOL

I love the look of well groomed hands and nails,but sometimes I don't always want to mess with polish,or have time spend at the salon. I recently discovered KISS nails at my local store,and decided to give them a try.

The package sat on my desk for about a week,since I wasn't sure how "artificial" nails would would really look on me. I didn't like the idea of using nail glue,and trying to fit the little tiny nails on my fingers. Eventually, I succumbed to curiosity,and gave them a try. I have a mixed review on these, I loved the look initially.. very nice, they looked like I had them done

at a salon,they went on very easily (I choose the ones with tabs) and the nail glue and time it took to apply was next to nothing.I was very careful to follow directions,and I even purchased a pair of rubber gloves to protect my nails from water when I did dishes etc. I was under the impression that with care, they would last at least 5-7 days.

I was really disappointed when my lovely nails started to lift and began to fall off on the second day of wear.Little by little the nails would start lifting and the glue underneath would almost dry up and cause the nail to fall off. I have already re-glued at least four nails back on.. not what I had hoped for.

I don't blame KISS, the nails are great, but I think the glue that came in the box should be tossed and replaced with a pro formula when you buy these. For the price,they are great but only for temporary wear,like just for a night..they will not last past two days,even with care. I'm not sure if I will use these again,I am trying another brand to see if they do the same and will report back later on them.
